Belo Horizonte Named Brazil’s Bitcoin Capital
On October 2, Belo Horizonte was officially declared the “Bitcoin Capital” of Brazil. Law 11.905 establishes the city as a national hub for cryptocurrency activities. The law aims to strengthen the city’s role in technology, finance, and Bitcoin education.
The law was proposed by councilor Vile Santos (PL). It seeks to attract investment, boost entrepreneurship, and promote innovation around cryptoassets. Belo Horizonte will also become a center for events, research, and discussions on Bitcoin and blockchain. Officials clarified the law does not affect federal financial regulations but focuses on education and awareness of global financial trends.
“The goal is to position Belo Horizonte as a reference point for study, debate, and development in the crypto sector,” Santos said. He added that promoting financial education and supporting local projects will prepare the city for future economic changes.
Brazil’s Crypto Market Growth
Brazil is becoming one of the world’s leading crypto markets. A Chainalysis report showed crypto transactions in Brazil reached R$1.7 trillion (US$318.8 billion) from July 2024 to June 2025. This is a 109% increase compared to the previous year.
Stablecoins made up over 90% of the transaction volume. This shows that digital assets are increasingly used for payments and remittances in Brazil, not just speculation.
Growing Importance of Local Crypto Hubs
Belo Horizonte’s new status reflects a wider national trend. Brazil is now the fifth-largest crypto market globally. Cities like Belo Horizonte are becoming local hubs that combine education, infrastructure, and regulatory readiness.
The growth of crypto also raises regulatory concerns. Brazil’s Central Bank plans to introduce new rules in 2025, focusing on stablecoins as their adoption rises and oversight becomes more important.
