Linea Token Generation Event Launches Amid High Demand
The Linea token generation event (TGE) officially launched on September 11, 2025. The first 55 minutes faced technical challenges due to unexpectedly high demand.
Joseph Lubin, founder of Consensys, explained on X that the early demand was more than twice their expectations, despite provisioning three times the needed resources. Consensys quickly added more capacity, stabilizing the launch soon after.
Lubin said, “The Linea token economy has been birthed. This marks one of the most significant milestones in our journey. Strategy, execution, and teamwork converged to unlock the next phase of growth.”
Building the Linea Ecosystem
Linea is an Ethereum-equivalent zkEVM rollup. It offers fast settlements, very low fees, and uses ETH for gas, yield, and burn. Each transaction strengthens Ethereum and expands opportunities for developers and users.
The token economy launched with mUSD as a central token for applications. Etherex provided $50 million in liquidity. Lubin said the ecosystem aims to grow fully, calling it “credibly neutral and a fertile home for permissionless innovation.”
Responsibility is shared through the Linea Consortium, which includes SharpLink Gaming, ENS Labs, Eigen Labs, and Status. MetaMask and Infura also play key roles in Linea’s adoption and utility.
Lubin added, “This is just the beginning. The TGE sets the stage for the next era of Consensys; one where Linea scales Ethereum, MetaMask drives adoption, and our collective work positions us to lead the industry forward.”
Token Airdrop and Community Reactions
Alongside the TGE, Linea launched its token airdrop, distributing over 9 billion LINEA tokens to eligible users. Users have 90 days to claim their tokens. The airdrop experienced a temporary sequencer issue.
Some users criticized the airdrop’s eligibility criteria, saying it favored whales and large holders. These users spent months completing tasks and paying high gas fees but received small rewards.
Binance users reportedly received their tokens early and could trade them immediately. This led to accusations of prioritizing large players over the active community.
According to CoinMarketCap, the LINEA token currently trades at about $0.0234. This is a 27% drop from its launch price.
