Rio Launches CyberGAECO to Fight Cybercrime and Crypto Crime
Rio de Janeiro’s Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPRJ) created CyberGAECO, a new task force to combat rising cybercrime and illegal cryptocurrency use. The unit was officially established on September 15, 2025, under Resolution GPGJ nº 2.740.
Prosecutor General Antonio José Campos Moreira said the task force responds to more sophisticated cyberattacks and the growing use of blockchain and virtual currencies in crime. The resolution notes that cyber-enabled crimes are increasing alongside society’s reliance on digital systems.
Focus on Organized Crime and Dark Web Networks
CyberGAECO will target organized cybercrime groups, especially those using cryptocurrencies. Its duties include intelligence gathering, legal actions, asset recovery, and cooperation with national and international agencies.
The unit prioritizes fighting dark web activities, money laundering via digital tokens, and financing of organized crime.
Collaboration and Advanced Technology
To succeed, CyberGAECO will build partnerships with public and private organizations worldwide. It will also acquire advanced technology and promote policies to strengthen cybercrime prevention.
This initiative aligns Rio’s prosecutors with global trends, where specialized cyber units play a key role in tackling blockchain-related financial crimes and online anonymity abuses.
