Solana Mobile Ends Support for Saga Smartphone
Solana Mobile has officially stopped supporting its Saga smartphone, two years after its launch. The company confirmed it will no longer provide software or security updates. This marks the end of the device’s lifecycle.
In a statement, Solana Mobile said, “The Solana Mobile Saga has reached the end of its support lifecycle.” The company warned that “compatibility with new software or services cannot be guaranteed.” Customer service will now handle only basic inquiries.
Security Risks and Industry Comparison
Saga owners will no longer receive important security patches. This leaves the devices vulnerable to potential threats. The two-year support period is shorter than industry standards. Apple supports iPhones for at least five years. Google offers updates for newer Pixel models for up to seven years.
Saga’s Launch and Legacy
The Saga launched in May 2023 as a Web3-native smartphone. It aimed to combine blockchain tools with regular mobile features and avoid app store restrictions. The device was built by California-based OSOM in partnership with Solana Mobile. It sold about 20,000 units, below the 50,000-unit goal.
Many users remember Saga more for its role in Solana’s memecoin activity than for mobile innovation. The phone came with preloaded crypto wallets. These wallets became targets for token airdrops from Solana-based projects.
This announcement follows the recent launch of Solana’s new Seeker phone. It raises questions about the long-term viability of crypto-branded hardware.
